About WordPress Sites

WordPress sites are the latest darlings in the web site universe. In existence for eight years, it is a robust web site architecture that began life as do-it-yourself blogging software for the masses. It has since matured nicely, allowing for installation of custom templates & plug-ins to add versatility. One of the many important features is that, once configured, it allows multiple users to collaborate— each creating their own articles and the ability to make changes.The folks at NY Times and People magazine seem to agree on its usefulness, as their sites are run on the WordPress platform.

There are two versions of WordPress. The first is the novice version with limited template choices and customization, hosted for free at the WordPress mega-site. Some customization is available, but at an extra charge. The second version permits you to install your own WordPress software on your own server, but you take full responsibility for your own templates and troubleshooting. This second modality, while allowing for virtually infinite customization, is not for the faint of heart. While WordPress software is "free" it still involves time and energy to get it up and running.

Some of my most recent clients have opted for converting their aging HTML sites to WordPress in order to take advantage of the collaboration features and to be able to do their own updates. It should be understood that to take advantage of the most advanced features it is best to leave the installation and customization to a professional. This process also includes basic training of particular features to get the most out of all that WordPress has to offer. While blogging (and a robust content management system database) is still at the heart of WordPress, the versatility is now light years beyond its humble beginnings, taking you far into the future.
